about

Twiggy (real name Joel Phiri) is the singer and producer who already made his name in BlackFace Family collective (albums "African Drums" and "Nthena"), a legendary group in Mzuzu in the northern region of Malawi. After moving to Blantyre in the south, the country's musical capital, Twiggy established himself in the club society there. The album is a collection of his observations and experiences of life in the big city.

Musically, Twiggy confidently propels between invention and compilation, composing, with the help of several producers, a futuristic mix of hot African styles that resounds on the best dance floors in Blantyre. You can hear afrobeats, afropop, dancehall, zed beats, and even a bit of AfroCongo on the album. However, everything is arranged to make space for Twiggy's voice.

Love and money are common themes in urban music, but few artists so accurately describe how longing for them and joyful consumption of them vibrate in the cities of the global south.

Digital Indigenous - a series that introduces the work of local producers - has never been so close to pop. For young people in cities like Blantyre or Mzuzu, various local shades of pop are a musical universe in which they live and sense. Twiggy's music is a pinnacle of such production.
